Like all segments of the online world, SEO continues to change at a dizzying pace. It seems like everyday there is a new update that requires a ton of reading. Of course, nobody has time to do all of that reading, right? Not only are there business to run and products to create and sell, but there are also tons of areas that require an equal amount of reading to keep caught up. In situations like this, it can be easy just to decide to something like SEO on the back burner until you have some time to digest it all.
We wanted to give you a bit of a hand in starting to tackle what’s happening with SEO. This is by no means comprehensive, but it will give you a brief glimpse into some of the key issues that have surfaced during 2012.
1. The Google Plus Factor: As you may have heard, Google launched yet another social platform last July. Called Google Plus, the platform launched to much fanfare as well as a little bit of controversy – “A-Listers” were the first people invited to the beta launch. People have been wondering how Google Plus would impact search, which of course has been Google’s Raison D’etre. There is still a lot of confusion about this issue. This article from Mashable explains a bit how the “+1” feature (kind of like the “like” button on Facebook) might impact your search results. There has also been a lot of talk about Search Plus Your World, which launched in January 2012. Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineLand does a great job of outlining how this impacts SEO, but one of the most important things to remember is that people have to be logged into Google (or Google Plus) for this to impact their results at all. Indeed, that is the key to many of the discussed impacts of Google Plus on SEO. Being signed in has significant impact on whether or not the social platform affects what you see when you search.
2. Penguin: Google constantly is making updates to its “secret sauce” algorithms. Often times these updates can have significant impact on how websites show up on the first page of search results. There’s been a lot of buzz about the Penguin update, which launched on April 24, 2012. Google has been framing it as an “anti-webspam” measure, which you can read more about in this post from Search Engine Land. The problem is that many websites have been dinged unfairly (at least from their perspective). You can read about the anti-penguin sentiment in this article from SeoBook.com.
3. Can you be “too” optimized? The third issue you may be hearing a lot about is the idea that websites can now be considered TOO optimized. In large part, this is still tied to the Penguin update, but sometimes the issue of over-optimization appears as an issue unto itself. I think this may be creating some unnecessary trepidation for companies who may be midstream in improving their SEO, which is unfortunate. This article by Modesto Siotos does an excellent job of delineating exactly what Google means by over-optimization, and he also ties the Penguin updates into the mix.
